What Is Pusoy and Why Every Filipino Knows It

If there's one card game that belongs to Filipinos, it's Pusoy. Walk into any tiyangge, sit down at a family reunion, or spend a slow Sunday at a friend's house in the province — sooner or later, someone pulls out a deck and deals thirteen cards to each player. No lengthy instructions needed. Everyone already knows the rules. That's how deeply Pusoy is wired into Filipino culture.

The game — also widely known as Pusoy Dos or Filipino Poker — is a shedding-type card game where players race to get rid of their cards by playing valid combinations. The key mechanic is simple: every play must beat the previous one, and the player who empties their hand first wins. What makes it strategic is the layered system of hand rankings, the read on what opponents are holding, and the decision of when to burn a strong hand versus when to hold it for a winning push at the end.

OKPiso brings this experience online with everything you'd want: a clean interface, fast matchmaking with real Filipino opponents around the clock, multiple stake levels so you can play at a pace that suits your budget, and instant payouts the moment a game concludes. You get the same competitive feel as a face-to-face game, with the convenience of playing from your phone at any time of day or night.

New players often appreciate how quickly OKPiso's Pusoy tables move. There's no shuffling, no cutting the deck, no waiting for someone to count their chips — the platform handles all of that automatically. You just focus on playing the best hand you can, round after round, against opponents who take the game just as seriously as you do.

Pusoy Hand Rankings — From Highest to Lowest

Every combination in Pusoy has a fixed rank. Learn these and you'll always know whether your play beats the one before it.

# Hand Name Example Description
1st Royal Flush A♠ K♠ Q♠ J♠ 10♠ Ace-high straight flush. Highest possible hand. Extremely rare.
2nd Straight Flush 9♣ 8♣ 7♣ 6♣ 5♣ Five consecutive cards of the same suit.
3rd Four of a Kind K♠ K♥ K♦ K♣ 7♠ Four cards of the same rank plus one kicker.
4th Full House Q♠ Q♥ Q♦ 9♣ 9♥ Three of a kind plus a pair.
5th Flush A♥ J♥ 8♥ 5♥ 2♥ Five cards of the same suit, not consecutive.
6th Straight 8♠ 7♥ 6♦ 5♣ 4♥ Five consecutive cards, mixed suits.
7th Three of a Kind 7♠ 7♥ 7♦ J♣ 3♠ Three cards of the same rank.
8th Two Pair K♠ K♥ 6♦ 6♣ A♠ Two separate pairs plus a kicker.
9th One Pair J♠ J♦ 9♥ 5♣ 2♠ Two cards of the same rank.
10th Single Card 2♠ (highest single) Played alone. 2 of Spades is the strongest single card.

In Pusoy, 2 is the highest-ranking card (above Ace). Suits rank Spades > Hearts > Diamonds > Clubs when comparing same-rank cards.

  • The 2 of Spades is the single most powerful card in the deck — it can only be beaten by certain special combinations.
  • You may only play a combination that matches the current play type — singles beat singles, pairs beat pairs, five-card hands beat five-card hands.
  • Every play must be strictly higher than the previous play. You can pass if you can't or choose not to beat the current card.
  • The first player to play all 13 cards wins the round. Remaining players pay according to how many cards they still hold.
  • Special penalties apply on OKPiso if you're caught with 10 or more cards left when someone else finishes — double penalty payout!

Pusoy Strategy Tips for OKPiso Players

Pusoy has enough depth that even players who've been at it for years still discover new angles. Here are some approaches that separate the consistent winners from the ones who rely purely on the luck of the deal.

First, don't play your strongest cards too early. If you burn your 2s and your Straight Flush in the first few tricks, you lose the ability to control the table late in the game. Save your heaviest ammunition for when an opponent is close to going out — a well-timed strong play can force everyone to pass and buy you the turns you need to shed your remaining cards.

Second, watch what your opponents pass on. When a player passes, they're telling you they don't have anything higher than your current play in that combination type — or they're choosing to save something. Tracking passes gives you a mental map of what might still be in their hands.

Third, manage your singles and pairs carefully. High singles and pairs are flexible currency — they can stop an opponent's run at any point. Running out of them too early often means you end up stuck with low cards you can never play when someone else has the floor.

Finally, play within your budget on OKPiso. A smart Pusoy session is one where you make decisions based on your cards, not on desperation to recover losses. The tables on OKPiso run 24/7 — there's no pressure to force results in one sitting. Know when to leave a session up and when to call it a night.

Play your combinations in ascending strength — start with moderate hands that force others to burn something decent to beat you, then escalate. When you've depleted their strong responses, your remaining cards can often run without being stopped. This approach works especially well at mid-stakes OKPiso tables.

Sometimes breaking up a pair to build a Five-Card hand (Straight, Flush, Full House) is the right move. The Five-Card combinations provide more control per trick than pairs do. If you can build a legitimate Flush or better, the extra card you sacrifice from a pair is often worth the trade.

OKPiso shows the number of remaining cards for each player at the table. Track these. If one player is down to 2–3 cards, every other player should prioritise stopping them — even if it means burning a strong hand prematurely. Letting someone go out on a solo run while you hold your powder for later is a classic blunder.

Intentionally passing on a combination you could beat can sometimes lull opponents into a false sense of security. They may play their next card assuming you're out of responses — and then you can come back with something decisive. Don't overuse this, but in 3-4 player games on OKPiso, a well-timed strategic pass can shift the whole dynamic.
